RICHARD HIRSCHBÄCK
Nebelfresser
Opening of the exhibition: Thursday, 09. August 2018
Stadtgalerie Lehen Salzburg in collaboration with The Richard Hirschbäck Archive have the pleasure to present the first larger retrospective exhibition of Richard Hirschbäck (1937 – 2007). A selection of paintings and previously unseen works on paper that largely originate from the 1960’s, 1970’s and 2000’s will be presented alongside each other to form an anachronistic dialogue between several temporalities. Richard Hirschbäck’s work, although not widely known to the public, represents a singular contribution to Austrian art of the second half of the twentieth century.
Richard Hirschbäck belongs to one of the most important artistic personalities of the last fifty years. However, he had early on rejected conforming to the art market and was determined to follow his own way – leaving us to have to (re)discover his work eleven years after his death. In the exhibition titled “Nebelfresser” (“The Cloud-Eater”, a self-coined term) at the Stadtgalerie Lehen, the selected works aim to not only present an insight into an artist’s abundant body of work, but in this specific moment, point their timeless character and a deep understanding of the human condition – which one unavailingly looks for in contemporary art.
